CHAPTER 16

Soren watches Kalli carefully. Unlike Quinn, who is generally easy to read, Kalli’s much more practiced at hiding her thoughts and feelings. He doesn’t think she does it on purpose. It strikes him as something she learned growing up as a survival technique that’s becoming an unconscious part of her now.

It’s been over a month since Kalli and Quinn agreed to stay with him and see what develops between the three of them. The only negative to the situation is that he’s desperate to know more about how she feels about him. But he tries to content himself with the fact that she never mentions leaving.

He could ask her. But that option is terrifying. What if the answer is that she feels nothing but mild affection?

No, better to give her time and hope that love grows between them.

Waiting is no hardship. Each day has been a pleasure. Beyond being friendly and joyful, his wolves are kind and considerate. They always ask before using his things, even though he’s repeatedly told them to treat his home as their own.

They’ve also taken it upon themselves to help him redecorate and each day brings Kalli and Quinn to him with ideas pulled from various websites. When he told them he wants to do their room on the second floor first and that they should pick everything out for their own pleasure, they still consult with him and try to find the best deals on everything.

Soon items should start arriving, and they’ll all throw themselves into the redecorating project. Soren can’t wait. Tailoring the room to his wolves feels like a tangible symbol of their intent to stay with him.

As far as he’s concerned, the only problem is that he wants to buy Kalli things just for her, but he can’t figure out what she would like best. He doesn’t want to give her things that aren’t thoughtful. He wants his gifts to have meaning. Whatever he gives her should have an emotional context. Random baubles won’t do.

He’s tried questioning Quinn about Kalli’s glass and crystal collection. After some halting conversation, Quinn admitted that Kalli wouldn’t like it if he said anything, so Soren stopped asking. The last thing he wants to do is cause strife between the couple. Not that he thinks it would be that easy, but better to keep Quinn from feeling pressured by either him or Kalli.

It’s finally December, and because it’s the season to shop for gifts, they are visiting the yearly winter bazaar. It’s only a few weeks until Christmas and people are happily bustling around looking at the various booths for the perfect gift for friends and family. The hot food vendors are doing a good business. The smell of roasting meat, fried potatoes, and funnel cakes fills the air.

With the days so short now, many activities going on in the town continue until well after dark, allowing Soren to take his wolves into town. They never complain about staying home, but he can tell they enjoy some time among the humans and experiencing new things.
